چکیده

High concentrations of pathogens and indicator organisms found in urban receiving waters are a common cause of concern. Though some question the actual public health risk associated with exposure to these organisms, large amounts of resources are spent attempting to identify and correct their source. This paper contains a summary of recent work describing the potential human health effects associated with pathogens and commo n indicator organisms found in urban stormwater and the receiving waters they feed, as well as a brief discussion of the development of water quality standards for pathogens. This information will enable the reader to more effectively consider the level of risk that may actually be present locally. Future phases of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency research that supported these initial investigations will develop and test methods communities may use to assess local risk to humans and the environment associated with exposure to urban stormwater and receiving waters (Lalor and Pitt 1998 and Easton 2000).

Potential Human Health Effects Associated with Urban Wet Weather Flows

High concentrations of likely pathogens and indicator organisms found in urban receiving waters is a common cause of concern. Large amounts of resources are spent attempting to identify and correct their source, while many question the actual public health concerns associated with exposure to these organisms. This paper contains a summary of the historical development of the U.S. water quality ...

Variability of E. coli density and sources in an urban watershed.

The objective of this study was to characterize the variability of Escherichia coli density and sources in an urban watershed, particularly to focus on the influences of weather and land use. E. coli as a microbial indicator was measured at fourteen sites in four wet weather events and four dry weather conditions in the upper Blackstone River watershed. The sources of E. coli were identified by...

Prevalence of human pathogens and indicators in stormwater runoff in Brisbane, Australia.

Elevated numbers of enteric pathogens in the receiving waters following a storm event can be a serious public health concern. The purpose of this study was to conduct a preliminary investigation into the presence of human pathogens of concern in urban stormwater runoff. The involvement of a human sewage as a potential source of contamination was also investigated by using microbial source track...

Incidence of gastrointestinal illness following wet weather recreational exposures: Harmonization of quantitative microbial risk assessment with an epidemiologic investigation of surfers.

We modeled the risk of gastrointestinal (GI) illness associated with recreational exposures to marine water following storm events in San Diego County, California. We estimated GI illness risks via quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) techniques by consolidating site specific pathogen monitoring data of stormwater, site specific dilution estimates, literature-based water ingestion data...

Urban Wet - Weather Flows 1

INTRODUCTION 4 This subject, Urban Wet-Weather Flows, was comprised of three basic subareas – combined-sewer 5 overflows (CSOs), sanitary-sewer overflows (SSOs), and stormwater discharges. Major proceedings 6 related to wet-weather flow (WWF) published during 2000 were the following: (1) ASCE EWRI 7 Conference – Bridging the Gap: Meeting the World’s Water and Environmental Resources Challenges ...
